FAQ

What is a puppy raiser?

A puppy raiser is a volunteer who welcomes a future service dog into their home, providing daily care, socialization, and foundational training. Puppy raisers help prepare dogs for their future careers while receiving ongoing guidance from our professional trainers.

Does it cost anything to become a puppy raiser?

No! Dinah & The Dogs covers all approved puppy raising expenses, including food, veterinary care, and necessary supplies. You provide the love, time, and dedication, and we'll provide the resources and support!

Do I need experience training dogs?

Not at all! No professional training experience is required. Our trainers provide instructions, guidance, and ongoing support throughout the puppy raising journey. We simply ask that you're willing to learn and follow our training guidelines.

How long will I have the puppy?

Puppy raising can last weeks to months; the timeline may vary depending on the individual puppy and their training progress.

Can I become a puppy raiser if I have other pets?

Absolutely! Many puppy raisers have pets of their own. All household animals must be compatible with a puppy, and our team will evaluate each situation to ensure a safe and appropriate environment.

Do I need a fenced yard?

Not necessarily! While a fenced yard can be helpful, it is not required. We consider your living environment, daily routine, and ability to provide appropriate exercise, supervision, and training.

Can I become a puppy raiser if I work or attend school?

Yes! Puppy raisers can have jobs, attend school, and maintain their regular routines. However, puppies require consistent care, supervision, and training. Our team will help determine whether your schedule is appropriate for a puppy.

Will I have to attend training sessions?

Yes! Puppy raisers are expected to participate in required training sessions, follow our training guidelines, and maintain regular communication with our team. We'll provide the resources and support you need to succeed.

What happens when it's time to say goodbye?

When your puppy is ready, they'll return to Dinah & The Dogs to continue their advanced service dog training. Saying goodbye can be difficult, but you'll have played an incredible role in preparing a dog to change someone's life!

What happens if I can no longer raise my puppy?

We understand that circumstances can change! If you're no longer able to continue, please contact our team as soon as possible. We'll work with you to arrange a safe transition back into our program.
